Prerequisite Coursework

Prerequisite coursework in ten content areas (listed below) should be completed in order to be considered for the Speech-Language Pathology M.Sc. program:

Phonology 3 credits
Syntax 3 credits
Speech science 3 credits
Language acquisition 3 credits
Phonetics** 3 credits
Developmental psychology 3 credits
Cognitive psychology OR Psycholinguistics 3 credits
Research methods*** 3 credits
Neuroanatomy, AUDI 402 3 credits
Neurolinguistics, AUDI 403 1.5 credits

*Courses are to be at the upper level (300 or 400) when possible. Note that most upper level courses have prerequisites at the 100 or 200 level. A 3 credit course is equivalent to a one-term course which meets 3 hours per week.

**Phonetics (including transcription practice) must be covered at some point in the course of study. Students are required to provide evidence of this in their applications.

To determine the equivalent courses at your university that fulfill a specific prerequisite:

  1. Compare your courses with the ten course content areas listed (above) in the minimum “Prerequisite Coursework.”
  2. Check the SLP Prerequisite Equivalency Chart for equivalent course numbers for your specific university. If your course is not on the chart , you must include a copy of the course syllabus (not the calendar description) with your application.
  3. Compare course descriptions from courses at your specific university with the UBC Course Descriptions.
