Clinical Faculty Access to UBC Libraries
Clinical faculty members are are entitled to full faculty access at the eleven libraries on UBC’s campus, and at three off-campus sites. The use of the Online Catalogue and Information System is particularly valuable, as many of the popular audiology and speech-language pathology journals are now available online in full text, providing valuable access from members’ personal computers.
Using the Library
Acquiring a UBC Library Card
UBC Library Card may now be acquired through an online application. (Note: There is a field for “family practice address,” on the form. Please be advised that this form is for all clinical faculty, regardless of practice.)
Accessing the UBC Library Online
To access the UBC Library online, users must establish a link to the library via a proxy server. Before entering the library site, users must activate the proxy. When finished on the site, users deactivate the proxy. Once established, connecting through the proxy involves only a single step for each time a user logs in.
Instructions for this process are given on the home page of the library. At the home page, select the “How To” category to find instructions on how to “access the library.” Move to “Connect from Home or Office (Remote access),” for instructions on to set up a proxy server via a home or office internet connection.
Proxy Server Setup Steps
- Using Netscape:
- Go to the top of the page, click on Edit, then select “Advanced” from menu. In the Advanced Menu, you select Proxy. On the Proxy Page you click on Manual Proxy Configuration. (For Netscape 7 you may need to click on “netscape” to find the preferences and thus the manual proxy.)
- On the proxy page you fill in the blanks as follows at HTTP Proxy type in “proxy.library.ubc.ca” and at Port type “8000”. You should now be set up to access the library. Go to UBC Library and, if the proxy is working, you should get a request for your library card number* (on the back of your library card, very long one below barcode) and your PIN (the last five numbers of your ID number on front of your card).
- If you do not get a request for your library number, click on “test” at the bottom of the proxy instruction page to see if your proxy is working. Then fill out as follows: Name = long number on back of card, password = last 5 digits on front of card.
- Once into the library, click on FIND, then on Article Indexes A-Z, then on P, then on PsychINFO, then on “Connect via the Web”. This should take you to the EBSCO Host where you can do a search.
- Using Explorer (ADSL constant “On”):
- Go to Tools, then Internet Options, then click on “Connections” then “LAN Setting”. Click the Proxy Server, then “Advanced”. Continue with Netscape steps 2 and 3 above.
- Using Explorer (dial-up internet connection):
- Go to Internet Options or Connections. Highlight“dial-up connection”. Click “Settings”. Select Proxy Server. Continue withNetscape steps 2 and 3 above.
(Note: The system may ask each time for your library card number, depending on whether or not your browser is set up to accept “cookies.)
