SASS students, staff, and faculty ran a Hearing Screening and Information program at the AMSSA Diversity Health Fair at the Croatian Community Centre, Vancouver, BC, on March 3, 2001

The SASS group saw about 70 adults and children for hearing screening, and spoke to others about hearing loss, hearing aids, and loud music (the last was easily demonstrated given the loud music and the noise level at the event!).

UBC conducts hearing screenings and tests at Special Olympics

Audiology students from our school, with other volunteers, ran a very busy and very successful Healthy Hearing program at the BC Special Olympics Healthy Athlete Fair in Vancouver this past weekend. Over 100 athletes, together with family members, coaches, and care-givers, attended.

Thanks for a hectic day of hard work to our students Lia Best, Andrea Bull, Aisling Smyth, Elissa Robb, Halen Panchyk, Kelly-Anne Casey, Celia McDermott, and Katie MacDonald. Thanks also to Triny Fong, Jabie Ng, Yvette Reid (St. Paul’s Hospital), Brenda Brumwell (Expert Hearing), and Steve Polinksy (CLAC).

Darlene Hicks was instrumental in keeping me functional through the planning and the event.

Equipment was supplied by UBC, Richmond Health Department, Western Institute for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, dB Special Instruments, Expert Hearing Solutions, and Special Olympics International.

We aim to make this an important annual event, interacting with Special Olympics BC over the year.

MSc student Shannon Osmond received a Harold F. and Anne Bedner Uphill scholarship from UBC College of Health Disciplines for the second year in a row. This award recognizes Shannon’s commitment to the enhancement of Aboriginal community health in BC and in Manitoba. Well done again, Shannon! We are very proud of you!

Barbara Cotter and Michelle Smits received the SASS Clinical Faculty Awards in recognition of their exceptional contribution to the clinical education of or MSc students.

Barbara is the recipient of the Elizabeth MacLeod Award for Excellence in Clinical Education for Speech-Language Pathology.

Michelle is the recipient of the Noelle Lamb Award for Excellence in Clinical Education for Audiology.

Clinical Coordinator Lisa Avery was presented with the 2011 BCASLPA Recognition of Service Award

The School is proud to announce that Instructor and Clinical Coordinator Lisa Avery was presented with the BCASLPA Recognition of Service Award at the recent 2011 conference.

The award is presented to a BCASLPA member whose special efforts and contributions, through volunteer service to BCASLPA and related organizations, have contributed to the growth of the professions of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Lisa was presented the award for her longstanding work with the Vancouver Fluency Interest Group and the BC Association of People who Stutter, countless hours mentoring students and clinicians in the area of fluency, and her passion in this field.

We are proud to have Lisa on our team at the UBC School of Audiology & Speech Sciences.

Professor David Stapells received the Paul Kuttner Pioneer Award

Professor David Stapells was presented with the Canadian Academy of Audiology’s Paul Kuttner Pioneer Award at their recent national conference.

This award is presented to a pioneer in Audiology in Canada, who has “boldly gone where no one has gone before” and been the “first” to embark on a new program or procedure which has impacted audiology service delivery in Canada. His work on the identification of infant hearing loss and auditory evoked potentials is widely recognized and used across North America.
